As a home educator (retired?), I still have some pretty strong feelings about schools and really how homeschooling might add some ideas to school reform or changing the game of school so that self directed learning is actually the goal however that looks. I also was lucky enough to have a pretty great public school experience when I was young (57 now) that actually encouraged self directed learning. I guess at the end of the day, I really want to be in a group where talking about what schools could look like but also how does a student 'play' the game of school while still furthering their education and directing one's own education.
About you:
I am a parent, a former home educator and I continue to be a community educator. Actually I say a former home educator but I feel like I still am doing that too ... whether having deep conversation with my daughter who is a college sophomore or curating/reading information about education, about history, about educating to counter oppression (one could say social justice education, anti-racist/anti-oppressive education). I also went to a small, very liberal seminary and really focused on creating learning opportunities and building curriculum that was counter oppressive ... including co-teaching an advanced theology class about queer theology.
